Unexpected songs/ Les chansons inattendues…

I really like music. I don’t play an instrument, I sing on rare occasions but hesitantly, but listening to music gives me such pleasure. It makes me feel good. When I do ironing I like some pretty strong rock and roll and I crank it up. When I’m on the computer it depends on my mood.

Today I was surprised by two blasts from the past and I’d like to share them with you.

The first was during church this morning when the band performed “The Rose” taken from the film of the same name. Here are the lyrics:
“The Rose”
Some say love, it is a river
That drowns the tender reed.
Some say love, it is a razor
That leaves your soul to bleed.
Some say love, it is a hunger,
An endless aching need.
I say love, it is a flower,
And you its only seed.

It’s the heart afraid of breaking
That never learns to dance.
It’s the dream afraid of waking
That never takes the chance.
It’s the one who won’t be taken,
Who cannot seem to give,
And the soul afraid of dyin’
That never learns to live.

When the night has been too lonely
And the road has been too long,
And you think that love is only
For the lucky and the strong,
Just remember in the winter
Far beneath the bitter snows
Lies the seed that with the sun’s love
In the spring becomes the rose.

A beautiful, haunting song that speaks of being hurt by love and being afraid to risk being hurt again, but finishes with an image of hope: the seed beneath the bitter snow that with sun’s love in the spring becomes the rose. Here’s the video with Bette Midler, who sang it in the movie.

The second song is something a friend put on facebook today, “Forever Young” by Bob Dylan and the Band. This song touches me a lot more now than in the past. At my age, going on 60, it really speaks to me because I still feel young. My body doesn’t look it and some days it really doesn’t feel it but in my head I really feel so good. I have so much more I want to experience. After all these years of experience I feel I’ve got a lot to share now. So I listen to this and think, ‘that’s right, Bob, Forever Young!!!’

There’s an ad on TV that captures this feeling. It’s a MasterCard ad where we see an old man get a phone call and he leaves his house walking with difficulty, to the music of Queen’s “Don’t Stop Me Now, but as he continues he gets younger and younger. Finally he arrives at the hospital on a skateboard looking like a teenager. As he enters the hosptial room to greet his granddaughter who has given birth to he greatgrandchild he is once again an old man but on the way to the hospital he was feeling Forever Young.

Here’s the lyrics followed by the video:

“Forever Young”
May God bless and keep you always
May your wishes all come true
May you always do for others
And let others do for you
May you build a ladder to the stars
And climb on every rung
May you stay forever young
Forever young, forever young
May you stay forever young.

May you grow up to be righteous
May you grow up to be true
May you always know the truth
And see the lights surrounding you
May you always be courageous
Stand upright and be strong
May you stay forever young
Forever young, forever young
May you stay forever young.

May your hands always be busy
May your feet always be swift
May you have a strong foundation
When the winds of changes shift
May your heart always be joyful
And may your song always be sung
May you stay forever young
Forever young, forever young
May you stay forever young.

Elle me fait me sentir bien.

“The Rose”
Some say love, it is a river
That drowns the tender reed.
Some say love, it is a razor
That leaves your soul to bleed.
Some say love, it is a hunger,
An endless aching need.
I say love, it is a flower,
And you its only seed.

It’s the heart afraid of breaking
That never learns to dance.
It’s the dream afraid of waking
That never takes the chance.
It’s the one who won’t be taken,
Who cannot seem to give,
And the soul afraid of dyin’
That never learns to live.

When the night has been too lonely
And the road has been too long,
And you think that love is only
For the lucky and the strong,
Just remember in the winter
Far beneath the bitter snows
Lies the seed that with the sun’s love
In the spring becomes the rose.

“Forever Young”
May God bless and keep you always
May your wishes all come true
May you always do for others
And let others do for you
May you build a ladder to the stars
And climb on every rung
May you stay forever young
Forever young, forever young
May you stay forever young.

May you grow up to be righteous
May you grow up to be true
May you always know the truth
And see the lights surrounding you
May you always be courageous
Stand upright and be strong
May you stay forever young
Forever young, forever young
May you stay forever young.

May your hands always be busy
May your feet always be swift
May you have a strong foundation
When the winds of changes shift
May your heart always be joyful
And may your song always be sung
May you stay forever young
Forever young, forever young
May you stay forever young.
