I Refuse/Je Refuse

This is my monthly Bloggers For Peace post. Bear with me as I take some time to talk about a song and how I think it relates to bringing peace to the world.

A couple of times I’ve spoken about musicians I appreciate but today I would like to highlight a song by a singer that I had never heard of before a Sunday service at my church a few months ago: Josh Wilson and his song ‘I Refuse.’  This song was used during the sermon and I was impressed by the message he was sharing. Then this past weekend I heard it again during a video presentation and it had the same impact.

Here’s the video followed by the lyrics:

“I Refuse” Josh Wilson

Sometimes I, I just wanna close my eyes
And act like everyone’s alright
well no they’re not
This world needs God, but it’s easier to stand and watch
I could say a prayer and just move on
like nothin’s wrong
But I refuse
cause I don’t wanna live like I don’t care
I don’t wanna say another empty prayer
Oh I refuse, to sit around and wait for someone else
To do what God has called me to do myself
Oh I could choose not to move
but I refuse
I can hear the least of these
cryin’ out so desperately
and I know we are the hands and feet of You oh God
So if You say move
it’s time for me to follow through
and do what I was made to do
and show them who You are
Cause I don’t wanna live like I don’t care
I don’t wanna say another empty prayer
Oh I refuse to sit around
and wait for someone else
to do what God has called me to do myself
Oh I could choose
not to move
but I refuse
to stand and watch the weary and lost
cry out for help
I refuse
to turn my back
and try and act like all is well
I refuse
to stay and change
to wait another day
to die to myself
I refuse
to make one more excuse
cause I don’t wanna live like I don’t care
I don’t wanna say another empty prayer
Oh I refuse
to sit around and wait for someone else
to do what God has called me to do myself
oh I could choose
not to move
but I refuse
I refuse
I refuse
yeah
What I like about his song is that it is so much more than a praise God, have faith in Jesus song. He’s challenging believers to get involved and to do something concrete.
Too many believers seem to think that God has to do something about all the problems and suffering in the world. If we pray, He’ll take care of it all. In fact, it’s more like ‘If you build it He will come,’ as in ‘Field of Dreams.’
But if you think about it, God gave Adam and Eve free will and He considered this free will so sacred that he didn’t interfere even when they were messing things up. God didn’t bring the problems and suffering into the world, man did. So it’s up to us to deal with the problems and suffering.
That’s what Josh Wilson realized. It’s not enough to pray that God do something. We have to roll up our sleeves and let God work through us.  Once we manifest a responsible attitude through our free will then God can act through us.
So, getting back to point of this post, it’s not enough to pray for peace. Each one of us needs to perform some concrete actions bringing peace into our lives, our families, our societies.
And here’s a video where Josh explains how he got the idea for this song and then you will hear the song again:

As you move forward into your day start observing what’s going on around you and look for ways that you can make things better.
That is how we can all help to build a peaceful world.
